Digital Urban Research (Smart City)

Professor Jörg Rainer Noennig’s research focuses on practical solutions for digital cities (‘smart cities’). This research examines the digital transformation of our cities, developing data-based analysis and planning tools in the process.

His research interests lie in combining smart city approaches, such as the Internet of Things, cyber-physical systems and digital twins, with core urban development topics, such as urban resilience, sustainability and integrated urban planning. At the intersection of these areas, Prof. Noennig and his team develop new digital tools and methods that are already being used worldwide.

There are many possible forms of collaboration for companies. These range from collaborative research projects and scientific services to innovation-oriented training and education formats. Prof. Noennig enjoys collaborating with both established companies and start-ups, and enables them to participate in his international network. Particular interest is shown in establishing joint spin-offs from academic scientific research and established companies.

  • Demonstration of state-of-the-art technologies and research results
  • Moderated expert discussions and network meetings
  • Presentations in the company
  • Method and knowledge transfer through workshops and training courses
  • Contract research, implementation of studies
  • Bachelor’s and Master’s theses linked to topics from the companies
  • Participation in third-party funded projects
  •  Internships and traineeships for HCU students in companies, lasting several months
  • Joint development of cooperative research and innovation projects

The collaboration projects that have already been implemented are also very diverse:

  • Development of an AI-supported land management tool with the State Agency for Real Estate Management and Land Assets (LIG) of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg
  • Designing interactive data rooms for urban development projects, such as HafenCity and Kleiner Grasbrook, in collaboration with planning offices, project developers, and IT service providers (e.g. HafenCity GmbH, EDGE Technologies, and REOS GmbH).
  • Exploration of new virtual and mixed reality approaches for architecture and urban planning with partners including Multimedia Kontor Hamburg, the industry association BITKOM and Unity Technologies.
  • Collaboration with renowned planning and architecture firms such as von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) in the field of digital participation in urban development
  • Implementation of international development projects with the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) in India, Ecuador, Ukraine and other countries
  • Collaboration with international organisations (World Urban Forum, UN, World Climate Conference, etc.) for intelligent and sustainable urban development with new digital solutions (including reconstruction planning for Ukrainian cities)
